My wife and I listened to this (sometimes) graphic description of the absolute moral decay of our society's morals and intend to have our grown children who are parents listen to it. We both felt that anyone who disagrees with this book is pretty much duped by the very problem this country has caved to--the brain washed moral relativism preached by Hollywood and those who lack intelligence levels above the waist. Anyone who takes a birds-eye view as to where we're headed as a culture can't deny we've taken a nose dive--and it has affected everything from the economy to the destruction of the family. The leftist "free pass anything goes" sex frenzy is evidence enough Mr. Shapiro is spot-on with the causes of the problems of how the cancer of immorality is ruining our society, and I'm thrilled to see someone who has the guts to call a spade a spade with regard to the utter nonsense and sophistry of sexual perversion in all its forms. We are recommending the book to everyone we know.

The Army Futures Command has just opened its headquarters in Austin, Texas, with a plan to ensure that the Army is prepared to fight the wars of the future. If this book is not on their reading list, it should be.Here are a few of the topics that the book covers. First, U.S. Army Ranger Scharre addresses the importance of "context" in combat by drawing on some of his experiences in combat in Afghanistan. The 7 year old girl sent by possibly hostile Afghans to recon his unit's position during an operation in Afghanistan. Under the definitions of war Ranger Scharre and his unit could have shot her, but they didn't because she looked to be about 7 years old. Would an autonomous weapon with the power to kill have made the same decision? Probably not.The book examines the question of "what is autonomy?" Not all nations define it the same way. What weapons have been built and used that could be considered autonomous. Some exist. Robots and drones - how are these being developed by the Pentagon and by private parties using off-the-shelf parts and software.Can autonomous weapons be used safely and, if they are used, what are the risks? Speed may be critical. If your opponent uses weapons that simply act faster than any human could, the likelihood is that other combatants will use these weapons as well.Does mankind "summon the demon" by building and deploying these machines? The book has a lengthy review of the parties and persons fighting to ban these weapons. If also looks at the effectiveness of various weapons bans both in the last century and over hundreds of years. Arms control has a very mixed history.One possible development may be the centaur warfighter - man plus machine. How do we control the warfighting capacities of machines with ever more capable artificial intelligence? I found the author to be very candid, well read, and open in his presentation of the present condition of autonomous weapons. If you have an interest in the topic, I believe that the book will reward your time. Five stars.

I read widely on AI and selected this book due to its ratings and a sample. My background includes ten years as a designer of control and safety systems for complex processes. This book definitely encompasses the whole spectrum of issues about autonomous weapons, including picking up bits from many high risk industries. These end up scattered about like little nuggets. There is significant discussion of the ethics and morals of accidents, and some of the politics of controlling technology.I found this a difficult read. Though the sections appeared to break this down into specific areas, the content within each section was often a mix of material that logically could have been elsewhere. There didn't appear to be an obvious reason for the ordering of the sections. Finally, the writing style was workmanlike, which is acceptable but not helpful when such a complex issue is the subject.I gave the book three stars because it was content rich but needed better execution to achieve its mission - whatever that may have been.

As a former U.S. Army ranger and a current Pentagon defense expert, Paul Scharre clearly explores the strategic, legal, and ethical pros and cons of the three degrees of autonomy, i.e. sophistication and intelligence, in weapons systems.Autonomous weapon systems can be subdivided into:1) semi-autonomous weapon systems (human in the loop), e.g. the homing munitions;2) supervised autonomous weapon systems (human on the loop), e.g. the U.S. ship-based Aegis combat system;3) fully autonomous operating weapon systems (human out of the loop), e.g., the Israeli Harpy.Mr. Scharre convincingly demonstrates to his audience that artificial intelligence (AI) systems can outsmart humans in narrow tasks but fall short of humans in general intelligence. For example, the U.S.-led coalition lost several aircrafts due to U.S. Patriot fratricides during the second Gulf War. In reality, the blame for these fratricides was to be assigned to the weapon system …. and some of its human operators who lack the required critical mindset to make the right calls.Furthermore, the degree of autonomy granted to weapon systems does not exist in a vacuum. It also depends on what the (potential) adversaries of the U.S. are able and willing to do for gaining an edge on the U.S. This arm race could ultimately undermine the idealized centaur model of human-machine teaming in war.Unsurprisingly, some non-profit organizations and smaller states strive for deliberately banning fully autonomous weapons due to what they consider the accountability gap in their performance. Think for example about crisis stability, escalation control, and war termination. These non-profit organizations and smaller states consider the international humanitarian law (IHL) principles of distinction, proportionality, and other rules insufficient in the presence of fully autonomous weapons. In a nutshell, their template is the generally successful bans on land mines and cluster munitions. Alternatively, some form of regulations on the use of fully autonomous weapons could come from the countries with the most to lose from a total ban, i.e. those with the most advanced military.In the meantime, technology in autonomous weapon systems presses forward at full speed.

I particularly liked the sections on more efficient communication (including language swaps to maximize the power of your words on pg. 71), suggestions of easy ways to show more appreciate and attention for everyone in your life (Chapter 4), managing meetings more efficiently, and more (Pg 99+). This book will reinforce your hunches about what’s worth your time, and change the way you think about time and attention as non-renewable resources in your Professional and personal life.

There aren't many books I would call MUST READS, but this one just joined the list. Need James does a masterful job of addressing an issue that is central to everything we all do, but often overlooked as we live our 'overwhelmed, overstressed, and overtired' lives. The practical strategies shared throughout the book, supported with relatable examples and relevant evidence make the book an easy read that opens doors for solving the problem, instead of just making a case for solving it. The truth is that there are too many valuable insight in this gem to allow sharing any here for fear of discounting another. And that's why this is a must read book--you'll be motivated to change the way you manage your attention, shown how to get started, and made aware of the pay-off when you do. Not sure there is much more to ask from 185 pages...WELL DONE NEEN JAMES!! Well done.

This is exactly what a business book should be. The author shares the what (attention), the why (better results), and the how (actionable tips in every chapter). My two biggest takeaways: 1) we don't have a time management crisis, we have an attention management crisis. 2) Figure out what to say no to so you can yes to what really matters.

I really liked this book. I was skeptical at first because it seems like common sense to say "I need to pay more attention in my business, family, and life", but Neen shows the hard costs of NOT paying attention and how to be more mindful of what matters most. I'm going to buy it for my entire team.

This book does an excellent job of covering the `soft', people and process side of how to bring about BIM change in an organization. If you haven't had the time to roam the planet collecting the best advice and case studies from the industry experts as Randy Deutsch has, then this book is for you. With lots of great case studies, quotes and lessons learned, it's easy to digest, and quite helpful. It has a friendly, personal and approachable style (like its author) -- almost like having your own BIM counselor.Many of the diagrams and thoughts represent current industry best thinking. And they have been made very clearly - potentially quite helpful for re-use in making presentations, in training or in communicating with your company management. Whether you are a beginner or expert, an owner, architect, contractor, or anyone contemplating how to advance Building Information Modeling in your organization - I think you'll benefit from reading BIM and Integrated Design - a wonderful text book `how to' manual for the `soft' side of BIM. My one year old loves this book. It's one of the few I don't mind reading over and over. The words flow very well and are both simple and descriptive. We get to see how children in a South African slum go about their day. They are waiting for their fathers to come home from the mines. It's really a very joyful book. There aren't very many children's books out there that show real poverty, but this book does it without reducing the characters to their poverty. The children find ways to amuse themselves while they wait and the people around them are kind and helpful.The only thing I didn't like about the book was that it's hard to tell the children apart page by page. I understand this was hard to do with the impressionistic style of watercolor, and perhaps it's worth the trade off. Still it kept me from relating to the children as individuals (the book is written from the perspective of "we").

I have used this book in tutoring a third grade child who has an unidentified learning disability with a significant reading delay. She is very engrossed in the story and enjoys the painted illustrations. We spend as much time as she wants on each page - each time she reads it she discovers something else about the story that she likes. Meanwhile, it gives me a venue to work on her word recognition and sounding out words and fluency skills. I watched my student gain self-confidence and a joy of discovery in reading through this book.

This book is beautiful touching story of childhood longing.Six children wait for their fathers to come home after ten months away working in the mines.We start their day with them as they wake in anxious anticipation. We follow them through their day with descriptive prose and amazing illustrations as they dress, go to school, make music and celebrate and wait and wait and wait.They will not go home until their fathers arrive. The wait is longer than expected but the excitement remains high throughout this book until the beautiful end.

At the Crossroads by Rachel Isadora is a made-up story. It is about kids waiting for their fathers to come home. They waited a long time. I think that this story is really cool and that other kids will like it. I liked the pictures a lot, except the one where the moon was orange.

This book is wrong on so many different levels, I will start with the picture of a nude boy holding nothing but a towel over his private parts. If I were to put a picture like that on the internet I would probably be arrested for Child pornography. Yet this is deemed appropriate for children 4-8 years old??? What kind of bizarre world do we live in #commonsense #idiocracy #commoncore

Rachel Isadora writes such wonderful stories And this one is another winner! Sweet story of children waiting for their fathers to return home (the fathers have been gone for 10 months working in the mines.). Watercolor illustrations are beautiful! Love this book; my children and I read it frequently.

I loved that it is was bilingual. I didn't love the story that much. It could have had more detail to make it more interesting.
