Gorgeous color pics and all the information you need to visit the most photographic landmarks of Northern California. I love that the author gives a grid rating the photographic interest of a place and the difficulty in reaching it. I'm old and I can't go scrambling over rocks like the young guns.

This is a handy guidebook for travel, but I expected it to be a greater technical resource for how to get these shots. Yes, the book tells you how to get there, and in some cases tells you better times of day to get a shot, but I hoped for more suggestions on settings or other technical hints to get the shots themselves. If you are looking for a travel book for some pretty scenery and a few unique locations, this book it for you. If you're looking for a book as a means to improve your photography, you'll want to look elsewhere or supplement with another training resource.Kudos to the author for information about Bowling Ball beach - I have been in that area countless times and never knew about it. However, I was somewhat underwhelmed by the quality of the photographs in general. Some were exceptional, but far too many shots of blurred waterfalls.

To start, I really liked the first three volumes in the series (Southern Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado). I used them on several trips and obtained wonderful pictures. I did buy the Oregon book but did not like it as much, nor did I find it as useful.I live in Northern California and I know a number of sites Gary mentions. I learned of some things new to me in areas I though I knew well, but in the areas I know best, I know there is much the book misses. None the less, this book is far better than any other guide to Northern California that I have read. And it is about a third longer than the other books in this series.Recommended! And I am eager for the Southern California one (White Mountain, Alabama Hills, Morro Bay, etc.)

Beyond the cities and freeways, much of California is still a natural wonderland with incredible variety. From deserts to rain forests, seashores to alpine peaks, there is so much here, so much natural beauty, one could spend a lifetime and not see it all. So Gary Crabbe has accomplished something very remarkable in documenting most of the best places to go in California to experience and photograph the natural world. It's an extensive volume, rich with detail, covering all the places I want to go, with many outstanding photographs by the author. If you want to shoot natural California, buy this book - it will put you where you need to be. And that's all I have time to say - I got to get back to reading and start packing for my next trip. Anza-Borrego is fantastic this time of year! Gary, I'll be looking for your tripod marks. Note -- this is volume 1, northern California. I can't wait for Volume 2, with coverage of the desert lands.

Before I go anywhere I do a research online for locations, best spots, best time and this book does pretty much that. This weekend went to Fort Bragg Mendocino, book came in handy. It gave me the spots, how to get there, time required etc, so I didn't waste time exploring and planned ahead. Used it as a guide and once there saw a different new world and endless photo compositions, opportunities. However I did not rely on this book alone, used my online research as well. And I am glad that I did,One example, Per the book went to Russian Gulch SP, book says there are 3 spot (manmade bridge, water fall and devil's punch) to photograph but there is one more gem, a natural bridge very close to it about 250 feet. I am glad that I explored and found it. For me I found it more appealing to photograph then Devils Punch or the manmade bridge. On the same spot turn around and see the pacific splashing on the cave (devil's punch) entrance. so the (4 stars). Author failed to mention that.I understand everyone see things differently but a natural bridge with waves splashing thru it can be of photographic interest (photo attached I raw format).

Gary Crabbe is an outstanding landscape photographer, and he has captured much of the best of the northern California area. The state is so large, you could probably put together four or five books to cover it all, but Gary has picked out some amazing locations, and gives clear directions on how to capture the image. This line of books has served me well -- I started out with the three for the Southwest and have now added the Oregon book as well. Highly recommended.

OK guide but mediocre snap shots used to illustrate locations greatly diminish the value of the value of this book. It is not on par with the three books by Laurent Martres and does him a great disservice. For San Francisco and Northern California the Photo Secrets book by Andrew Hudson will be infinitely more useful. The micro climates vary widely in the state by location and so does the weather and amount of sunshine available vary month by month as well as the presence and behavior of wildlife but this is not mentioned in the book. During the peak of summer the central valley will usually have a thick agricultural haze and the coastal areas around rivers and harbors (from Santa Barbara to Crescent City) will usually have a thick marine layer that makes for gray days and lackluster photographs. Coastal hills that are brown and barren in appearance in November will be a verdant green in April and the pictures taken will be quite different in almost every respect.
