If you need the A to Z's on Design 101, this is the book for you. It's definitely called Home Decor Cheat Sheets for a reason. This is guide for D.I.Y.ers and budding home designers a like. I love how it breaks down and simplifies what and what not to do. There even illustrations that clearly point out with a X or a check mark, what works together and pictures of didn't styles of fixtures and furniture that make it that much easier to be clever when talking to others on home improvement. Although simplicistic with pictures and symbols, I never felt that the book was treating the reader like they didn't know anything. The author found the best way to make a lot of information easily digestible.As much as I love physical books, gotta love a Kindle edition as you can pick and choose your chapters with just just a click, which makes it much easier when you're looking for particular information. After perusing the whole book, I went back and looked up the chapter on design and decor tricks. Proportion and scale are always something I've had trouble with. I've bought furniture before that didn't work for the space just because I liked it. Now I have have a better idea how to make my space and style fit together. This will be a go-to in my reader any time I have a home improvement bug.

I'm not kidding...I thought that I knew about decor because I spent so much of my youth playing the much acclaimed video game, the Sims. I couldn't have BEEN more wrong! My fiancee and I are looking for a new place (I know, I admit to playing the Sims, but have a fiancee--we all are multifaceted in all things including maturity rofl) and we had to furnish completely from scratch--eep! And my soon-to-be mother in law sent me this. It's actually super helpful. And really easy to read. Sometimes this decor stuff gets to verbose etc etc but this is really to the point and the pictures are so helpful! Great to have on hand especially if you have projects coming up.

This book couldn't have come into my life at a better time! I'm moving in a week and will be purchasing all new furniture next month. Having the vocabulary (and the useful, cute pictures) to talk about furniture with salespeople and conduct online searches has drastically improved my results. In addition, the author adds measurements to help you plan before you even head to the furniture store. How many inches should the wall be away from the dining table on each side? How much shorter should the coffee table be than the sofa? I had no idea before picking up Jessica Probus's cute, practical book, but now I do! In addition, I'm so glad I sprung for the Kindle version so I can keep all my furniture plans in one convenient place as I head out to purchase. There are tons of ideas presented without the obnoxious twee quality that a lot of Pinterest-style blogs have. Glad I got this!

This is a great book for anyone wanting to change or redecorate their home. This book explains the different kinds of styles of furniture, different kinds of tables, bedroom sets, tiles and rubs, windows and doors, artwork and walls, lighting, hardware and cabinetry and design and decor tricks. There are great ideas for doing Do It Yourself projects. I really liked the different styles of upholstered sofas and chair styles. This would be a perfect gift for anyone buying and furnishing their first home. I especially liked the sections that gave the amount of yardage for re-upholstering furniture and the sizes of beds. Also included are helpful web sites for more resources. Great book just to have in the library!

UMMM whoever thought of this is a freaking genius. I never knew i needed this until I got it - mind blown. This book is aamazing - it really helps creaete the perfect lingo when talking about furniture. As someone who is constantly working how to save money until we can afford the perfect furniture piece, this book truly helped me nail a few concept ideas. I genuinely had no idea that there were so many different styles and names for things. I always thought I was a Retro girl but when it came to our kitchen stools, I was really a mid-century type of girl. Who knew? The book did. The visuals are fun and cute. I love the intro before each chapter which gives enough information to have a new perspective but doesn't overwhelm your mind in a pretentious way. Just thinking about the fact that tiles pattersn and shapes can change the lok and scale of a room completely was insight we hadn't thought about before. I appreciated the new perspective.Great book! Highly recommended.

I expected a book of decorating advice, such as "dos and don'ts". This book has some of that, but it is mostly illustrations of different styles of furniture and their names. While pretty to look at, it's actually pretty useless as a decor "cheat sheet" because when you are shopping for furniture these terms almost never show up in the names or descriptions of the pieces you are looking at. A professional designer talking to other professional designers may use these terms, but they wouldn't need this book (and the book is in no way comprehensive so even if they did need a visual reference book it wouldn't be of much use to them).Any of the useful information in this book can be easily found online. There is a wealth of infographics on Pinterest from countless decorators and most are more detailed than anything in this book.

I really liked this book because it not only describes what makes a place look inviting, it gives you the exact measurements that you need. How many times have you been at a friend's house and banged your leg into the coffee table? It's because your friend hasn't left enough room (in inches) around it for people to walk comfortably. Just how many inches is that? This book will tell you.
