Her Innocent Marine by Arthur Archambeau is an inspiring love story starring a soft-hearted Marine named Danny, and Beth, the woman he meets and falls in love with. The writing in this book is good, there are few if any, grammatical errors, and the subject of war and its effects on people is very relevant to our time. The relationship between Danny and Beth is erotic in the beginning and then evolves into a deep and lasting connection. Since Danny is a Marine, there are war scenes in the book. They are gripping, graphic and sad, but the idea of a Marine as innocent as Danny tends to add a softness to the story as well as a hint of humor. The Marine Corps’ viewpoint on women is represented and it’s not a pretty picture; but Danny isn’t your typical Marine when it comes to women. He doesn’t see them merely as sex objects and he isn’t afraid to say so; because of this he’s branded as naive by his fellow Marines. Then along comes Beth; she’s patient and loving and just the kind of woman Danny needs.Danny’s innocence makes for a great contrast with what it’s really like to live the life of a Marine. The comradeship and brotherhood of the Marine Corp is portrayed and it’s real and inspiring. When Danny tells Beth he’s about to be deployed to Fallujah, Iraq and that he’ll be fighting in a war zone, Beth doesn’t understand or want Danny to go. But she loves him enough to wait for him and provide him with the emotional support he needs. Beth represents the part of our population that has limited knowledge of what war is really like and the sacrifices our troops make.As a Marine, Danny is both a fighter and a lover. He’s simple and trusting, and at first his love for Beth seems like puppy love, but as he matures, so does their love. The war scenes in the book are realistic and made me wince to think about what our men and women go through when they’re fighting overseas. Readers will get a good understanding from this moving and patriotic story of what being a United States Marine really means.
Her Innocent Marine is a deeply emotional story about two people seeking the kind of love found only in fairy tales. Having met on the street Danny and Beth connect over an abused and abandoned kitten. Danny is a Marine Corporal about to embark on a tour of duty in Iraq and Beth is a single veterinarian technician. With his tour of duty just days away, Danny shares with his well-meaning yet misguided friend, Ritchie that he doesn’t want to leave the states as a virgin. Ritchie makes it his personal mission to make sure to have his friend meet and bed a woman before the two Marines report for duty at Camp Lejeune. With kitten in hand Beth boldly asks Danny for a ride home and invites him in. Sharing their backgrounds, quirks and dreams, the conversation is easygoing and relaxing. Even so Danny is still nervous and uses silly jokes to appease himself. As the two of them bond over their likes and dislikes the physical attraction is undeniable. As a romantic at heart, Danny has fallen for Beth and she sees him as the man in uniform that she has always dreamed of. They agree to spend his last days on leave together and continue getting to know one another intimately and develop an undying love for one another. When it is time for Danny and Ritchie to return to Camp Lejeune, Beth and Danny promise to remain in contact and meet again when his tour is over. While Danny fights for his country in the war in Iraq the only things holding him together are his love for Beth and the brotherhood bond between soldiers. During this portion of the book the author, Arthur Archambeau is very descriptive of the events that occured during Danny’s times at war. Reality sets in when Danny and his fellow soldiers take on a deadly assignment. Doing what he joined Marines to do, he feels conflicted between his job as a soldier and the taking lives for the good of his country. His ultimate goal is to come out alive to begin a life with Beth. When Danny returns to the states injured, Beth is there to help him through. He has seen horrific things that stay with him day and night. As with most traumatic experiences, he is depressed, pushes Beth away and begins to give up on life. It takes love, courage, and determination to bring someone back from depression, but Beth gives her all and tries to help Danny fight the battles in his mind that keep him bound and angry. To say that love conquers all is an understatement in this story. The author has written a story that will make you smile and it might make you sad, but in the end it will make you glad that you read it.
The story Her Innocent Marine surprised me. At first, it starts out a little crass and you think, okay, this is just an erotic story with nothing to it other than the sexual heat. But that wasn’t the case at all. There were two instances when the story arced into a nice complete circle that made me smile and appreciate the writing of author Arthur Archambeau. The story begins with Danny Shaunessey, who is a rough mouthed marine looking to lose his virginity before he heads overseas to Iraq. Danny is very naïve and innocent when it comes to sex. He asks a lot of questions and is incredibly uninformed, but his incredible naivety is an important part of his character. Later in the story, his girlfriend Beth Kelly has an expectation about Danny’s reaction to a personal situation that is also very naïve. I really liked that we got to see her outside of her comfort zone and element, making assumptions that just weren’t true and completely misreading a situation. I thought it was a very nice balance to Danny’s naivety earlier in the story.I also really liked how animals played a part in this story. Danny is nicknamed “Puppy†because he’s so naïve and innocent. He meets (and impresses) Beth Kelly when he rescues a stray kitten being tormented. Later, when an animal returns to the story, it felt honest and natural. It really made me smile and I commend the author for weaving the animals into the story flawlessly.
