Amazon.com Review

Film Directing Shot by Shot offers a good introduction to the rudiments of film production. Steven D. Katz walks his readers through the various stages of moviemaking, advising them at every turn to visualize the films they wish to produce. Katz believes that one of the chief tasks of filmmaking is to negotiate between our three-dimensional reality and the two-dimensionality of the screen. He covers the number of technical options filmmakers can use to create a satisfying flow of shots, a continuity that will make sense to viewers and aptly tell the film's story. Katz provides in-depth coverage of production design, storyboarding, spatial connections, editing, scene staging, depth of frame, camera angles, point of view, and the various types of stable compositions and moving camera shots.

Review

"Now that you've got a couple of shorts under your belt, why not get a little more analytic? Steven Katz's book gives a great breakdown of the fundamentals of film directing. It's not something you might want to start off by reading, but once you are ready to have your films take that next step this should be number one on your to do list. Katz breaks down film language for you so that you can learn how to speak it in your own way." - www.austinfilmfestival.com

I got what I needed out of this book: to learn the different camera shots and movements and the reasons one is used over another for a given scene. I was aware of the editing issues before I bought it, but I was willing to take a chance because it seemed to have the content I needed. In that regard, I was not disappointed. The editing flaws are not catastrophic; just misspellings here and there. While these flaws are unacceptable for a professionally published book, I still consider it a good purchase for my needs.

very nice book full of ideas and rare prints of original film storyboards like Empire of the Sun and Citizen Kane,

You better put on your thinking cap, have several arms, and eyes in the back of your head if you're thinking of "directing" a film. Seeing the concept is one thing but, putting all the shots together is more than saying...action! "Shot by Shot" gives the director everything he/she needs regarding process, elements of continuity, the workshop to the moving camera.Make sure you take the time to read and study this book, especially if you're a novice. This is not a book you merely scan through or think you can skip some of it's processes. You will lose time and money, and losing either one of these can cost you your film. It will get shelved."Shot by Shot" is very detailed;a book you want to keep close by, even if you think you know what you're doing. It will also help you to get what you want from everyone involved....a great film, and another chance at directing.:-}And as always with Amazon, the price was right.

Helpful and great book but the condition wasn't to swell when i recieved it.

Have not finished reading it. So far, it is very informative.

If you're going to get this, get the actual printed book. The book itself is pretty good. Somewhat outdated now, but the underlying concepts still apply in my mind. The Kindle version sucks. What makes this book useful are all the diagrams and photos, which while still in the Kindle version, lose most of their value when they're presented digitally (at least in Kindle format). The photos are meant to be viewed next to the adjacent page that describes them and the Kindle just can't do that. The quality of the photos also suffers from image compression and the overall shrunken dimensions of the Kindle screen (when compared to the actual book).

This book is an absolute must for filmmakers. It is instructive on what you expect from your cinamatographer and determining if your director understands the screenplay the way the writer wrote it.All the emphasis is done with camera work. The director (if it is not you) must know where and how to place the emphasis. But you have to know also. How else can you be critical of a shot or series of shots.Steven Katz, the author of "Shot By Shot" understands what filmmaking is all about. That is why this book continues to sell year after year. "Shot by Shot" is the icon for scene setting and filmmaking.
