I was expecting something a little on the wild side and, I suppose, there was some of that. I also was prepared for a great deal of profanities to shock me, but there was none of that. So, what was there?One of the more touching short memoirs I have ever come across. Although I am certainly no comic like the author, in many ways I did identify with him. Well, in a few ways. Unfortunately, if my soul were measured up against his, I would be woefully lacking.What this author did for his fellow black sheep, his grandmother, is what ever grandson should do for at least one of his grandparents. He gave her a life worth living at an age when most people are simply waiting to die.I got the free audible edition and listened to it and recommend each person do likewise. The narration by the author is not as smooth as the writing reads, but it is all the more valuable because he reads his own thoughts and speculations to us.BLUSH FACTOR: No worries here. This is suitable for all audiences.POV: First person.WRITING & EDITING: Professional. Easy to Read. This guy had me at, “As we drove off to the (police) station, I belted out the theme song to the TV show ‘Cops’.” Rory Scholl’s well-crafted narrative chronicles his journey as a young man forced to face the parallels between his life choices and those of a beloved family member after the soul-damaging parental admonishment “you’re just like your grandmother” sinks in. Does Rory summon the courage to embrace the black sheep traits? Listen and and find out! I don’t think I’ve heard Mr. Scholl on the RISK! podcast. Where can I hear more from him??

Blown away that this is work from a first time author. This work reminded me of both Updike and Carver. I was captivated from the very first page. Can’t wait to see the awards this short story picks up!

This was a funny story. I listened while cleaning the house and so my boys overheard it and they were laughing too.

Black Sheep is a charming, sweet, funny tale of a grandson and grandmother linked by more than just genes. The author takes you into his relationship, leaving you wanting to hear more.

Such a great short story, and super engaging. Loved the build up to grandma’s double cross, and Rory’s forgiveness of it all. A bittersweet, funny short. Grandma would be proud!
